Buffalo Lake Ranch

Buffalo Lake Ranch…. Since 1942

Buffalo Lake Quarter Horses

Buffalo Lake Ranch is a family owned ranch located near Eden, South Dakota, just west of Sisseton and east of Britton in the beautiful Coteau Des Prairies hills in northeast South Dakota. The ranch was established by Wesley and Goldie Hellwig in 1942 and remains a working ranch today. Our primary focus is cattle and buffalo, with an occasional pot bellied pig, goat, turkey, and peacock.

We have been breeding and raising ranch and working Quarter Horses since 1968. Our horses are pasture bred and born. They grow up in the pasture with their herd mates, cattle, and buffalo. Our breeding program is geared towards creating offspring with good bone, balanced muscle, and good minds. Their pedigrees go back to foundation bred quarter horses including Doc O’Lena, Sugar Bars, and Two Eyed Jack.

Our horses are used on the ranch to work the cattle and buffalo. They are used in the pastures to gather the herds and also corral work when sorting and cutting. We use them in the spring during calving season and they are also used to doctor cattle in the pasture. In addition to ranch work, our horses have been used for team roping, 4-H horse projects, trail riding, ranch rodeos, team penning, reining, and western pleasure.

We invite you to look at the horses we have for sale and please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
